Planned Burn Mt Rooper section Conway National Park

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships (QPWS&P) will conduct planned burn operations on the Mt Rooper section of Conway National Park and Conway Conservation Park from Monday 17 June 2024 to Friday 21 June 2024, weather permitting, as part of the annual hazard reduction and conservation management program for parks and forests.

As a result, smoke may be seen in the local areas and beyond. Smoke can decrease visibility, so it is important that motorists, mariners, and pilots drive/fly safely to the conditions.

For public safety, access to the planned burn area will be closed until further notice. All walking tracks, shared trails, camping areas and associated carparks within the planned burn area are closed, including:

  • Mt Rooper circuit
  • Swamp Bay walk
  • Swamp Bay camping area
  • Coral Beach walk
  • The Beak lookout.

The aim of this burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas. This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Local residents should close windows and doors and keep medications close by if suffering from a respiratory illness
