Activity description
If you have or intend to keep, breed or trade a protected animal in Queensland, or commercially breed or sell protected animals you may need a Standard, Specialised or Advanced Licence.
Permit summary
The type of licence you need will depend on the species of animals and number of animals you wish to keep, as well as the level of breeding and trade you wish to engage in.
Schedule 3 of Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020 specifies the list of birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates (Class 1 and 2) that may be held under these licences.
- Standard licence – allows up to 10 class 1 animals only you are not permitted to breed.
- Specialised licence – allows up to a total of 50 class 1 and 2 animals, this licence also allows the keeping of a limited number of dangerous snakes.
- Advanced licence – allows for keeping and trading in an unlimited number of class 1 and 2 animals, and a limited number of dangerous snakes.
Please note: Class 1 and 2 animals include a variety of amphibians, reptiles, birds and some invertebrates. Mammals are not permitted to be kept in Queensland.

How to apply
Once you register for an Online Services account, you can log in and select the Wildlife Authorities hub. If you do not have an account you will need to create a new customer record as an individual/sole trader or Organisation (e.g. company) and select 'New application'.
