    Camping and accommodation

    Camping

    There is no formal camping area at Mia Mia State Forest.

    Bush camping is permitted in all areas of the State forest, although a site beside Temburra Creek at Captains Crossing is the most popular. No facilities are provided. Visitors must be self-sufficient and bring their own drinking water. Bush camping is accessible by walk-in, four-wheel-drive vehicles, motorcycles, trail bikes,  bicycles and horses.

    Remote bushwalking requires special skills. You will need to be physically fit, have bushwalking and navigation experience, and have an emergency plan in place with a responsible friend or family member.

    For your safety always check the current park alerts to learn of any park conditions that could affect your planned trip or special operations such as planned burns that may be scheduled. Camping permits are required and fees apply.

    Bushwalkers must be well prepared and carry:

    • a topographic map, compass and/or GPS (and know you to use them)
    • first-aid kit, drinking water and food (including extra in case of emergency)
    • Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) are recommended.

    Note: mobile phone reception within the State forest is unreliable.

    Driving

    Enjoy a scenic drive from the township of Pinnacle to Mia Mia State Forest and Captains Crossing.

    Drive south from Pinnacle on the Mackay-Eungella Road and turn right onto the Pinnacle Septimus Road. Travel for 5km to Septimus Creek, turn right before the creek and follow the track for another 1.5km to the State forest boundary. Continue on for 7.5km from the boundary, through the forest to a picturesque stream crossing at Teemburra Creek. Take along lunch and enjoy a picnic in the shade at Captains Crossing.

    Mia Mia State Forest is accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles only. Access can be restricted due to extreme weather conditions. Visitors should check park alerts prior to departure.

    Registered four-wheel-drive vehicles, motorcycles, trail bikes and bicycles may be driven or ridden on roads in this forest. Unregistered and conditionally registered vehicles are not permitted. The driver must hold a valid licence to operate the vehicle.

    A special permit may be required for a commercial activity, organised event activity or a competitive event.

    Horseriding

    Saddle-up and explore Mia Mia State Forest on horseback. Horseriding is permitted on open roads and tracks.

    Please remember to ride safely and minimise your impact on these special natural areas. Take note of weather conditions before you set out and avoid traversing over wet or muddy soil to reduce the spread of weed seeds.

    Viewing wildlife

    Mia Mia State Forest hosts an array of wildlife. Listen for skinks rustling in the undergrowth and the melody of bird calls.
