Forest features

Discover the scenic forests north–west of Gympie in Brooyar State Forest. Sandstone cliffs, tall eucalypt forests, rainforests and hoop pine plantations are features of the forest. A lookout point on top of the cliffs provides an impressive western view. The cliffs are popular abseiling sites.

Glastonbury Creek flows beside the small camping area which offers a great setting for a quiet getaway camping experience.

The shallow, sandy stretches of Glastonbury Creek are fringed by riparian rainforest.

During summer, flowering trees adjoining the camping area colour the forest. Look for rich red and yellow flowers in black bean trees Castanospermum australe and vivid orange flowers in silky oak trees Grevillea robusta. Across the creek, a grove of white cedar Melia azedarach trees become a mass of yellow as their leaves change in autumn.

Looking after the forest

All plants, animals and natural and cultural features of the forest environment are protected. You can help protect the forest’s values so it can be enjoyed now and in the future by observing these guidelines:

• Do not take or interfere with plants, animals, soil or rocks.
• Use a fuel stove where possible.
• Ideally bring a fuel stove for cooking. If you plan to use a wood fire for cooking:
  • Bring your own clean-milled firewood. Never gather wood (or kindling) from the bush—it provides homes for wildlife and nutrients for the soil.
  • Check for fire bans and always follow ban requirements.
  • Be aware that summer is a high fire risk time.
  • Keep your cooking fire within the fire ring provided.
  • Never leave the fire unattended and always put the fire out by using water (not sand or dirt).
• Do not feed or leave food for animals. Human food can harm wildlife and cause some animals to become aggressive. Store food in a lockable container.
• Stay on designated roads and walking track. Do not create new tracks as this creates erosion.
• Take rubbish and recyclable waste away for proper disposal as bins are not provided.
• Leave pets at home. Dogs are permitted but must remain on a leash and under control at all times. Dog faeces must be bagged and removed from the park.
• Obey signs and safety notices.

Forest management

Brooyar State Forest is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) under the Forestry Act 1959, to preserve and present its natural and cultural values while providing nature-based recreational opportunities. Future planning for Brooyar State Forest will be developed under the Values Based Management Framework.
