Camping and accommodation

Picnic or camp beside Pandanus Creek at Jaxut camping area. This shady area offers picnic tables, a compositing toilet and communal fireplaces. The water flow at Pandanus Creek is highly seasonal, ensure you bring adequate drinking water. Jaxut camping area is approximately 12km west of the Bruce Highway.

Camping permits are required and fees apply. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite.

Driving and trail-bike riding

Venture out for a scenic drive beyond Jaxut camping area to Cathu lookout. Located 7km from Jaxut camping area the lookout offers spectacular views over the Clarke Range. Suitable for 4WD vehicles only.

Motorised activities (four-wheel driving and trail bike riding) are allowed on the public access road only. Vehicles must be registered, and drivers licenced. HQPlantations conduct harvesting operations in the State forest, drive with caution as logging trucks share this road.

Horse riding

Saddle-up and explore Cathu State Forest on horseback. Horse riding is allowed on the public access road in this State forest. Horses are not permitted in Jaxut camping and picnic area.

Cycling

Take your bicycle for a pedal on the public access road through the State forest. Always wear the correct safety gear and avoid cycling on the road when it is wet, muddy and soft.

Other things to do

This is a quiet retreat for people who like to relax and enjoy the bush. We suggest you go for a walk and discover the forest wildlife. Ulysses butterflies, whiptail and agile wallabies and northern quolls live in the forest. Take your binoculars and go birdwatching. More than 100 species of birds have been seen in the forest.
