Set up your self-sufficient camp, whether it is a tent, camper-trailer or campervan. Take a short stroll to the river, relax by the cool deep waterhole and small rapids on the Gregory River.

Sit by the river's edge with binoculars in hand and watch the spectacular variety of birds darting down from the treetops to the water for a drink. Look among the treetops surrounding the waterhole to spot the whistling kite's nest.

When you tire of relaxing, drive to nearby Riversleigh - D Site visitor area to learn about the Riversleigh World Heritage Area and explore the fascinating Riversleigh fossil trail.

Sleep under a star-studded sky and emerge with the dawn to watch wildlife venturing to the river’s edge for the start of a new day.

Getting there and getting around

The Miyumba camping area is in the Riversleigh section of Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land) in remote north-west Queensland, close to the Northern Territory border, 270km north-west of Mount Isa. The Miyumba camping area is:

4km south of Riversleigh - D Site visitor area on the Riversleigh Road, and
55km southeast of Lawn Hill Gorge on the Riversleigh Road

Miyumba camping area offers a remote camping experience, with few facilities.

Opening hours

Miyumba camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check-in to your camp after 2pm and check-out by 11am on the day of departure.

Camping area features

Small camping area set in open woodland in close proximity to the Gregory River. Shade is limited.

Location: 4km south of Riversleigh D Site and approximately 55km southeast of Lawn Hill Gorge.

Access: via unsealed road. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. The camping area can be reached by conventional vehicle during May to September, with caution.

Number of sites: six sites (separate but not numbered).

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, campervans, and camper trailers.

Camp site surface: dirt.

Facilities: drinking water (tank can be empty) and a hybrid toilet. Treat all water before drinking.

Open fires: not allowed—fuel or gas stoves only.

Generators: not allowed.

Essentials to bring: drinking water, a fuel or gas stove for cooking and rubbish bags. Read more about before you visit.

Mobile phone coverage: not available at Miyumba camping area or Riversleigh D Site. Consider bringing a UHF radio (channels one and six are local repeaters), a satellite phone or personal locator beacon (PLB). Mobile phone coverage is very limited and unreliable in the national park.
