The rugged mountainous landscape of Mount Elliot Range offers the opportunity for remote hiking and remote bush camping. Only experienced, well-equipped bushwalkers with good navigation, first-aid skills and emergency location equipment should undertake extended overnight hikes in this section of the national park.
For public safety, two restricted access areas have been declared in the Mount Elliott section of the national park. Restricted Access Area notice, Mount Elliot section (1) Southwest boundary ; Restricted Access Area notice, Mount Elliot section (2) Northern boundary .
Before you visit
Seasonal closures
Remote bush camping at Mount Elliot is only available from 1 April to 30 November (inclusive). Remote bush camping may be closed at other times due to severe weather conditions and park management activities.
Camping area features
Number of sites: non-specific remote hiking site. Camp site must be at least 1km from other camping areas. Your hiking group should have at least 2 people, maximum group size is 6.
Facilities: none.
Camp fires: prohibited. Bring a fuel or gas stove.
Generators: not permitted.
Essentials to bring: campers must be completely self-sufficient, carry food and water, a fuel stove, navigation and communication equipment and a first-aid kit. Read more about remote hiking and visiting safely.
