Camping on the Carnarvon Great Walk

The Carnarvon Great Walk offers remote camping opportunities in some of the wildest country in central Queensland.

Walkers’ camps

There are five camping areas on the Carnarvon Great Walk. These are Big Bend walkers’ camp, Gadd’s walkers’ camp, West Branch walkers’ camp, Consuelo camping zone and Cabbage Tree camping zone.

The maximum group size for your Carnarvon Great Walk, if camping overnight, is six people. You can stay for a maximum of two nights in a row and numbers are limited at each of the walkers’ camps, so advance bookings are essential. Camping permits are required and fees apply.

There are water collection shelters with hand pumps at Gadd’s, Consuelo and Cabbage Tree walkers’ camps. During winter, make sure to collect your water in the evenings, as the water in the pumps can be frozen in the mornings, and the pumps can be easily damaged by trying to force water out.

Big Bend walkers’ camp is located on a permanent creek.

West Branch and Gadd’s walkers’ camps have water tanks with taps located at both sites.

Carnarvon Gorge Section

Camping is permitted in the Carnarvon Gorge visitor area during the Easter, winter and spring Queensland school holidays. Outside school holiday periods you will need to organise accommodation. Visit tourism information links for details.

Big Bend camping area, reached by a 19.4km return walk, is open all year.

Bookings for this small camping area and for camping at the Carnarvon Gorge visitor area cannot be made at the visitor centre.

Mount Moffatt Section

Mount Moffatt has four camping areas, each with a limited number of campsites. During school holidays, campsites must be booked in advance.

Dargonelly Rock Hole and West Branch camping areas

These camping areas can be reached by high clearance 4WD vehicles in dry weather. Hybrid flushing toilets and water are provided.

Rotary Shelter Shed and Top Moffatt camping areas

These areas are accessible by 4WD vehicle only. The small Rotary Shelter Shed camping area has a picnic shelter, pit toilet and barbecue. Water is available but is limited and should be used for drinking only. The Top Moffatt camping area has a toilet only—no water is available here.
