Get back to nature and pitch your tent among the eucalypts and white cypress pines. While just 14km south of Agnes Waters you will feel a million miles away in this rustic, secluded camp.
Grab your binoculars and look and listen for the parks many feathered folk. Honeyeaters feed on the nectar of golden banksia flowers, while red-tailed black-cockatoos screech overhead.
Take a walk along the beach and explore the rock pools or throw in a line and fish for flathead, trevally or whiting. Finish your day sizzling your catch over a camp fire.
Getting there and getting around
Middle Rock camping area is in Deepwater National Park, about 6.5km south of Agnes Water on the Central Queensland coast.
The camping area is 3.8km from the southern entrance, and 6.7km from the northern entrance, on the Deepwater coastal drive. You will need a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle with high and low range capabilities to access this site.
- Be respectful of the park neighbours by staying off private property.
- Remember all vehicles must be registered, drivers must be licensed and all Queensland road rules apply, even on beaches.
- Read 4WD with care for important information on 4WD safety and minimal impact driving.
From Bundaberg
Two-wheel drive vehicles can only access Wreck Rock camping area and Wreck Rock day-use area from the south. Contact local information centres first to check current road conditions are suitable.
High clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with high and low range capabilities are required for accessing all other areas.
Access roads to camping areas are suitable for off-road camper trailers. Caravan access is not possible.
- From Bundaberg, take the Rosedale–Seventeen Seventy Road (sometimes signposted as 1770) approximately 58km to Berajondo.
- Turn right into Tablelands Road, 500m before Berajondo.
- Travel along Tablelands Road for 2.8km and turn right into Hills Road.
- Proceed for 19.2km to a T-junction.
- Turn right into Coast Road and follow it for 5.6km.
- Just before Wartburg, turn left into Fernfield Road.
- Travel 7.5km then turn left into Deepwater Road.
- Follow the road 10.5km, cross the concrete ford, swing right and then turn immediately left into Wreck Rock Road. This is the start of the Deepwater coastal drive.
- From here the park boundary is 2km, the Wreck Rock camping area turnoff is 5.5km and Middle Rock camping area (accessible only by high clearance 4WD) a further 3km.
From Agnes Water
Access only by high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles with high and low range capabilities.
- From Agnes Water, follow Springs Road for 4.4km.
- Turn right into Wreck Rock Road (unsealed, sand track). This is the start of the Deepwater coastal drive.
- The northern park boundary is 2km along this road.
- Middle Rock camping area is 14km south of Agnes Water.
- Wreck Rock camping area is 17km south of Agnes Water.
Before you visit
Opening hours
Middle Rock camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check in to your camp after 2pm and check out by 11am on the day of departure.
Camping area features
Bush camping behind the fore dunes, just a short walk to water and beach activities.
Location: at the north-east side of the park.
Access: the camping area can be reached by high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles with high and low range capabilities only. Access is suitable for high clearance camper trailers. The camping area is not accessible for campervans, caravans and buses.
Number of sites: small open area without separately defined sites. Camp only in the area defined on the camping area sign map.
Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car and small groups.
Camp site surfaces: sand.
Facilities: fire rings available at some campsites.
Open fires: fuel stoves are recommended. Campfires are permitted in fire rings provided, except when fire prohibitions or fire bans are in place – check Park alerts. Please bring your own firewood. Collection of firewood and the use of chainsaws are prohibited.
Generators: permitted between 8am and 9pm; they must have a sound rating of less than 65 decibels (2.0Kva).
Essentials to bring: drinking water, clean-cut firewood, gas or fuel stove, rubbish bags, insect repellent. Read more about before you visit.
Mobile phone coverage: generally not available.
