Kambuwal (tent sites) camping area

From your shady camp site in amongst the granite boulders, enjoy superb views of The Pyramid while surrounded by a spectacular range of birdlife.

Kambuwal tent sites are 5m x 5m in size, and are suitable for small to large tents.

Kambuwal camping area, nestled in among trees and granite rocks, has more intimate sites suitable for small trailers and various-sized tents.

Tent sites have dedicated fire pits and picnic tables attached to their site.

Getting there and getting around

Kambuwal camping area is in Girraween National Park, located on the Queensland–New South Wales border, 260km by road south-west of Brisbane.

Kambuwal camping area is situated 300m south of the Girraween Visitor Centre, on the southern side of Pyramids Road. There are two access roads (northern and western) to the centre, both accessible by conventional vehicles. Pyramids Road links the northern and western park entrances.

From Brisbane to western entrance

  • Drive about 220km south-west along the New England Highway via Warwick to Stanthorpe.
  • Continue 26km along the New England Highway to Wyberba (30km north of Tenterfield).
  • Turn onto Pyramids Road and follow this winding bitumen road through the Wyberba Valley 6km east to the western park entrance.
  • Drive about 3km on Pyramids Road to the camping area.

From Brisbane to northern entrance

  • Drive about 220km south-west along the New England Highway via Warwick to Stanthorpe.
  • Turn onto Sugarloaf Road, which turns into Eukey Road and drive about 15km via Storm King Dam towards Eukey.
  • About 1km before Eukey, turn onto Breens Road, drive 2.5km then turn onto Pyramids Road and drive about 6km to the northern park entrance.
  • Drive about 3km on Pyramids Road to the camping area.

Opening hours

Kambuwal camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check in to your camp after 2pm and check out by 11am on the day of departure.

Seasonal closures

Parts of Kambuwal camping area may be closed from time to time for regeneration.

Camping area features

Kambuwal camping area has semi-shaded sites suitable for small camper trailers and various-sized tents. When booking, you must choose either a tent or camper trailer site. Sites are not numbered and available on a first come basis.

Location: Kambuwal camping area is situated 300m from the Girraween Visitor Centre, on the southern side of Pyramids Road.

Access: Kambuwal camping area can be reached by conventional vehicle. In some cases, it is not possible to park near your tent site.

Number of sites: 13 tent sites and 8 trailer sites.

Tent sites: Campers with tents, select one of thirteen tent sites in either open or semi-shaded areas throughout the camping area, with some vehicle parking either on the site, or close by.

Camper trailer sites: Kambuwal camping area has eight semi-shaded and open sites suitable for camper trailers. Some sites allow full sun for greater solar power availability.

Camp site surface: hard decomposed granite soil, dirt, grass.

Facilities: shower cubicle (BYO Shower and water), toilets, unfiltered water (treat before drinking) and dedicated picnic tables and wood barbecues for some tent sites. The Kambuwal camping area amenities block has wheelchair access together with PWD facilities including a toilet and shower cubicle (byo portable shower and water). As rubbish bins are not provided you must take your rubbish with you when you leave. There are no powered sites.

Open fires: permitted in QPWS barbecues only (except when fire bans or prohibitions apply). Fires should not be left unattended. Fuel stoves are recommended. Bring your own cleaned, milled firewood if you want to use the fire pits. Never collect wood from the bush. All barbecue ashes need to be disposed of appropriately (wet down and take to waste transfer station). Ash must not be dumped in the camping area or bush.

Generators: not permitted.

Essentials to bring: drinking water, rubbish bags (no bins are provided), insect repellent, fuel or gas stove in case of wet weather, warm clothing and warm bedding. Read more about before you visit.
