Hike up the steep ridge behind the camping area and gaze at striking views over the red sandstone walls and blue waters of Middle Gorge. Watch kites soaring above the lookout—they often nest along the gorge rim.
Retrace your steps down the ridge to return. Look for beautiful purple-crowned fairy-wrens among the pandanus lining the creek. An early morning or late afternoon walk will give you the best chance of spotting one.
One of the park's western walks, this short track can be accessed from the shady concrete path along the creek from the Middle Gorge day-use area. If you want a longer walk, from Duwadarri lookout, continue on the Indarri Falls track to Indarri Falls lookout and follow the circuit to return.
Getting there and getting around
The Duwadarri lookout track is in Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land) in remote north-west Queensland, close to the Northern Territory border, 270km north-west of Mount Isa.
- The Duwadarri lookout track can be accessed from the car park in the Lawn Hill Gorge section of the park.
- From the car park, walk to the Lawn Hill Gorge visitor centre and take the Rainbow Serpent track to the Middle Gorge day-use area, then turn left and follow the concrete path west along the creek bank to the start of the Duwadarri lookout track.
More details are available on Visiting safely.

Drinking water
- There is no drinking water along the track, but you can collect water (treat before use) from the taps at the Lawn Hill Gorge visitor centre and Lawn Hill Gorge camping area.
