New Great Sandy Marine Park Zoning Plan commences 21 May 2024

Using the marine parks app and maps

From 21 May 2024, new zoning and designated areas will apply in the Great Sandy Marine Park. Until 21 May, the existing marine park zoning and designated area rules continue to apply.

This page will be updated with further information after the new zoning plan commences.

The geographic coordinates shown on mapping products for Great Sandy Marine Park, and listed in the Marine Parks (Great Sandy) Zoning Plan 2024 are expressed in the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 as legally defined by the National Measurement (Recognized-Value Standard of Measurement of Position) Determination 2017.

When using these coordinates please ensure your GPS device or plotter is set to use the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) datum.

How to access and use zoning and designated area maps

Download the Marine Parks Southern Queensland App (currently under development) to access and understand zoning and designated area rules in the Great Sandy Marine Park and Moreton Bay Marine Park.

The Marine Parks Southern Queensland App will:

  • show what zone and designated area you’re in and what activities are allowed/prohibited
  • work outside of mobile range
  • be available for download via Google Play and the App Store, for use on your smartphone or tablet.

QLD Fishing 2.0 app

Marine park zoning in Great Sandy Marine Park will also be available on the QLD Fishing 2.0 app, after 21 May 2024. The app provides information on recreational fishing rules and also contains zoning information. It can be downloaded on the App Store or Google Play.

How do you know which zone and designated area you’re in when you’re out fishing or boating in the Marine Park?

After 21 May 2024, zoning information will be available on some GPS fish finder units and chartplotters. Check back here for more information.

After 21 May 2024, datasets (for zoning and designated areas and marine park habitat types) will be provided to help interpret the zoning plan, via the following platforms:

  • QSpatial- Geographic Information System (GIS) dataset of the Great Sandy Marine Park
  • Webservice containing Great Sandy Marine Park datasets along with other state marine parks datasets
  • Queensland Globe
