Yarul Dhingiga: Keppel Bay reef rehabilitation project

An innovative project trialling 'reef stars' (hexagonal sand-coated steel structures with coral fragments attached) to build new stable areas of live coral reef habitat is currently underway in the Keppels. Miall Island camping area features fringing reefs on the south-eastern and northern sides of the island are very good for diving and snorkelling. The camping area is behind the small beach and fore dune to the south-west.

Camping area features: fringing reefs on the south-eastern and northern sides of the island are very good for diving and snorkelling. The camping area is behind the small beach and fore dune to the south-west.

Location: Miall Island is 11km east of Rosslyn Bay Harbour.

Access: the camping area can be reached by boat only.

Number of sites: 1 site only with a maximum of 6 people.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping only.

Camp site surface: sand.

Facilities: none.

Fires: Prohibited (open and closed). Gas or liquid fuelled stoves for cooking purposes are permitted.

Generators: not permitted.

Essentials to bring: all food and drinking water, sturdy rubbish bags, insect repellent, sun protection, first aid, reliable torch. Read more about before you visit.

Mobile phone coverage: mobile coverage generally reliable. VHF marine radios and satellite phones are recommended.
