Set in the historic heartland of the island, Boorangoora is a must-see for all island visitors.
Unpack your picnic lunch in the fragrant shade of the scribbly gums, blackbutts and bloodwoods and read about the Butchulla Aboriginal people’s connection to this lake and their country.
With your towel and camera (and your kayak if you have one!), head off down one of the sandy paths to the lake. You won’t be able to resist the clear blue water, ringed by pure white sand. Marvel at the precise reflection of the sky on the lake’s smooth surface as you float in the cool water.
This park is part of the K'gari (Fraser Island) World Heritage Area, famed for its exceptional natural beauty, outstanding examples of coastal dune landform development and evolutionary history.
The Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) day-use area is on K'gari, 15km off the coast of Hervey Bay and about 300km north of Brisbane.
You can get to the island by high clearance 4WD, on foot, by plane or with a commercial tour.
From Inskip Point (15mins from Rainbow Beach)
From River Heads (east of Maryborough)
The toilets and picnic facilities are wheelchair accessible with assistance. The sand in the car parks and on the tracks is very soft and powdery and can be difficult to navigate. There is no wheelchair-access to the lake.
Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) day-use area is open 24 hours a day.
