Camping in K'gari
Permits required:
Vehicle access permits (VAPs) must be purchased for every vehicle before entering Fraser Island Recreation Area. 24hr number plate surveillance cameras are in use. Please ensure vehicle number plate details are correct on your permit. For more information see:
Camping permits for QPWS camping areas are required and must be purchased before setting up camp—fees apply.
- When making your booking, you will need to know the name for the camping zone or area you are booking. You must stipulate the place and dates you intend to camp. You cannot camp elsewhere during that period unless you amend your booking beforehand.
- A camping permit booking number must be clearly displayed at your camp site.
- Camping bookings can be made up to 6 months in advance, which is strongly advised for peak period bookings—school holidays and public holidays.
K’gari Great Walk
Camping bookings can be made up to 6 months from 1 March to 30 September, which is strongly advised during peak periods-school holidays and public holidays.
As a result of high fire danger conditions typically experienced on K’gari over the warmer months causing an unacceptable risk to the safely of walkers in remote areas, a seasonal restriction on forward bookings for the K’gari Great Walk camp areas is implemented yearly from 1 November to 28 February. Restrictions on forward bookings are limited during this time to fourteen days in advance only and intended to reduce any impact on visitors if any walking tracks are closed at short notice. During this time when the walk and camp areas may be closed, rangers will regularly assess the fire danger conditions and open the walk (or sections of the walk) and associated camp areas whenever conditions allow.
- Collect your permit tag and visitor information from one of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships offices or permit issuing agents.
- Permits cannot be purchased from rangers on the island.
- As mobile phone reception on K'gari can be unreliable QPWS suggests purchasing your camping permit prior to arriving on the island from www.qld.gov.au/camping or visiting a permit issuing centre.
